Affirmations and the science behind them.

Affirmations are such a powerful way to bring about the change and things that you desire and require. However there is a science to this that not everybody understands but they do know about it. Affirmations are like mantra’s, like a prayers that is said over and over. Many cultures and societies use this method to bring about healing, prosperity or happiness to a community. How can you use the power of affirmations to give you the life that you desire? In this post I look at the science behind the power of intention and affirmation.

1. What is an affirmation?

An affirmation is a repeated word or sentence or a collection of sentences that are said over and over (sometimes in a repetitive manner). An affirmation is the action or process of affirming something. They are you being in conscious control of your thoughts. They are short, powerful statements. When you say them or think them or even hear them, they become the thoughts that create your reality. Affirmations, then, are your conscious thoughts.

Research has shown that we have between 45,000 and 51,000 thoughts a day. That’s about 150 to 300 thoughts a minute. Research has also shown that for most people 80% of those thoughts are negative.

It’s an interesting phenomenon, really. It actually proves true what your mother always warned: be careful of what you think because what you think is what you get. She was basically telling you that you create what you think about.

When you’re not aware of your thoughts, they tend to be negative. And not being aware of your thoughts tends to cause a nasty spiral downward. Remember that 80% figure of negative thoughts? It gets worse. Whatever you are thinking about, 90% gets carried over to the next day’s 51,000 thoughts. So, if you’re thinking negative thoughts, you will cause yourself to think more negative thoughts. This is not going to get you out of your rut.

Affirmations can change all of that! Affirmations make you conscious of your thoughts. To affirm means to say something positively. It means to declare firmly and assert something to be true. Affirmations are statements where you assert that what you want to be true is true.

2. The power of belief

Belief in something is a strong and powerful assertion. There are two types of people those that believe and those that don’t. Some need the proof, the mechanics and logical understanding to believe in something and to know that it works. Then belief is installed. Other individuals just believe, either on a subconscious level or on an emotional level and just have the ‘knowing’.

Belief has the power to move mountains, OK not literally, but as the saying goes it has the ability to make things happen. The power of belief is the power of your thoughts. If your thoughts are focused and positive energy will flow where thought will go.

When people are faced with difficult circumstances and things to which they cannot understand, the mind is forced to try to find a place for where this new info can be slotted into the overall map they have of the world and reality as they see it.

That is when problems occur.

Frustration at not being able to obtain the desired outcome or control of ourselves, others or the world around us, is what causes us to develop psychological problems. How this disparate information and learning is slotted into the individual’s map of the world depends very much on the individuals existing map.

There are as many maps of reality as there are people on this earth and therefore the same circumstance can produce very different reactions and internalised representations of how to deal with this in the future. Therefore some people can be exposed to a danger and simply see that as something they should avoid in the future, whilst others can create an irrational fear of anything to do with that, even though their conscious mind can logically know, that it may be something that could ultimately be beneficial to them.

Although there are only two core strategies (move towards or move away) for achieving man’s two primary goals in life (survival and procreation), the world of possibilities can help to create an infinite matrix of interconnected rules and therefore maps of how we should behave and how we actually do BE & HAVE.

You can achieve anything that you put your mind to, but your mind must first believe that that is true and to do that you may need to reprogram it to eradicate all the negative clutter that has accumulated throughout the years.

For example:

Do you believe you will be successful?

Do you believe you will be happy?

Do you truly believe that you can have what you want in life?

If not then perhaps it is time to start realising (real eyes) your mind needs maintenance, exercise and attention just like the rest of you.

3. How belief works

Lets break this down into mechanical or neurological processes to help in the understanding of how ‘belief’ works. Our mind is made up of many neurones that fire from synapse to synapse. In order for the synapse to work there needs to be a certain amount of energy, an electrical process that catapults neutrons from synapse to synapse. This electrical current is in our bodies and is in synchronicity with the earths electro-magnetic field. The neurones influence our thoughts which influences our behaviour that influences action. So, you see how important this cycle is. In order for belief to happen, you have to be ‘knowing’ that a certain belief will happen - this is what the premise of manifestation is all about.

The ‘knowing’ his a vital part of this process. When you know that something is going to take place or happen, you concentrate and put all your efforts into making that happen. All the neurones are drawn to that purpose, thats where you alter the neural path in your brain - neuorplasticity. The electro magnet work in sync with this process. Our neurones are little magnets attracting this process to happen. This is the basic pathway in the law of attraction. Our thoughts are like little magnets because they are charged by electricity which act as a magnet (electro-magnetic field). So you see there is proof that this process works.

So, how can you put this process to work today? Well, try and see. Think of something that you really desire, more abundance, more friends, more work etc… Put all your efforts into making this happen. However, there has to be the power of will involved in this too, you ant just sit back and wait for things to come to you. No, no, you also have to look out for the clues, for the synchronicities and act upon them. Believe that you will have this no matter what.

You can change your ‘now’ that shapes your tomorrow, this is scientifically proved! What do you want to happen in your life, what changes are you going to make?

4. The power of visualisation

The power of visualisation works hand in hand with the Law of Attraction. The idea is to visualise an image in your head; by consistent visualisation of this image, it will be attracted to you.

You already do this, probably without realising you do it! Whenever you focus on what might go wrong, things will go wrong and serve to reinforce a tendency to focus on what might go wrong… because it has, in the past, over and over!

But you can also take that immense creative power and use it for your benefit.

By keeping the idea of what you want on your mind, you will be more likely to do what it takes to make that dream a reality. You will also be more attuned to opportunities and the right people when you give your mind a powerful visual command.

Everything that was ever created or achieved first started as an idea in someone’s mind. Usually in response to some need or some desire, an idea took hold and the person began focusing mental energy on it. The idea built on itself as the mental energy became infused with emotions. This created a massive desire and the person’s mind went into overdrive looking for ways to marry the vision with physical reality.

Ideas of “how” and “when” were generated based on that initial visualisation… and this snowballed until… the chair you’re sitting on was designed built; the keyboard on your computer was designed and built; the music on your iPod was written, rehearsed and recorded; your favourite perfume or cologne was crafted…

Think about this in terms of your body – every single physical action you take is generated in your mind. Step to the left. Stand up. Pick up a fork. Rub your nose. Before you do any physical action there’s a split-second image in your mind – which may be conscious or subconscious – that signals the body to take a specific action (not ‘step left and wiggle your pinky toe’ – just ‘step left’).

It’s the same with things you want to attract into your life.

The key to success in any venture is creating a mental image of what you want. Elite athletes do this all the time – they visualise themselves flawlessly executing a complex, difficult and strenuous physical action, and this vision of perfection actually has physical consequences. And you can do it too. Here are some essentials for powerful visualisations:

1. Be in love with what you want

You won’t get positive results if you’re not really excited about what you desire. Your emotions are the driving force behind your visualisation! Don’t be ho-hum about it. Give your goals your passion. But… don’t become too attached to the outcome because something even better might manifest, in unexpected ways!

2. Visualise often, for short intense bursts

If you can hold your image for as little as half a minute, you are creating a powerful attraction. (Longer than that is really difficult unless you’re an experienced meditator who is able to shut down the mental chatter). Visualise often and gradually build up to longer, more detailed visualisations.

3. Make your image as detailed as possible

Being too vague is going to give you vague results. It’s okay to be specific with what you want!

4. Believe

This is essential. Don’t put pressure on yourself to believe, especially if it’s a huge dream that has you overwhelmed. Just take the attitude of play, like a little kid. Kids believe 100% in the monsters under the bed. They also believe 100% that they are princesses or pirates.

Have fun with it, and while you’re in that mental movie, immerse yourself in it and believe in it. When you’re not visualising, and you’ve got any doubts whatsoever, FORGET about thinking of your dream. Let it sink in via your imagination first.

Conclusion

You can apply this to your healing, do you want to be destroyed by what happened to you in the past? Do you want the narcissist to have control over you for the rest of your life, they will if you believe that they ruined and took something from you. Instead, why not concentrate on how well you want to be in your life, how wonderful your life can be for you (and for your children). What do you want to show for your time her eon earth? Do you have a dream or direction? Listen to your soul’s calling, what does your hear whisper to you? Its about being open to the universe and adjusting to the algorithm of that purpose. You CAN do this, its your birthright.

I hope this blog post inspires you to live your best life.
