Things I'm Loving In August!

How is it already August???

When they mean, time flies when your having fun... like they really can, because it has flown for me.

So, recently I have been really drawn to the scent of rose. I'll be honest, Im not someone that naturally gravitates to the scent of rose, I actually don't really like. But recently have found myself gravitating towards the scent. I mean like from candles to perfume ( I know that Jo Malone do a beautiful Rose cologne).

I began to wonder, why I was so drawn to the scent of rose so that I looked up the botanical properties of rose and I discovered that rose is used in the practise of self-love. That really resonated with me because this is something that I have been missing in recent months. I have been so busy writing essays, research proposals and other chores that I had totally forgotten about myself! I know that I am the advocator of self-love and looking after yourself - that I forgot to look after myself! Isn't it funny that you are your own doctor / psychologist / physician - your body will indicate toy what you need. If you allow yourself to listen to it. And this is one of the main reasons why I am writing this blog, is to encourage you to listen to your body, in the form of cravings, images in your mind's eye and yearning for certain foods. This is your body's own way of healing itself - but you have to be attuned to receiving this information.

Discovering Your Own Doctor Within

This may be hard to believe, but as a doctor I've seen many patients with beautiful, young, so-called perfect bodies who never listen to them. They are too worried to know what their bodies are actually saying. They are too wrapped up in body image and the whole scam about being perfect. Ironically, their bodies are all in their heads.

Your body and mind are meant to be a whole, and to ensure that they are, your whole existence is based on feedback loops. Body listens to mind; mind listens to body. Awareness is the link. Make no mistake: Every cell knows when you are unhappy, anxious or stressed. A cell's awareness is expressed in chemical reactions instead of words. No matter. The message comes through loud and clear.

Let's broaden the topic this week. What can you do to start listening to your body? The most basic elements are as follows:

Feel what you feel. Don't talk yourself into denial.

Accept what you feel. Don't judge what's actually there.

Be open to your body. It's always speaking. Be willing to listen.

Trust your body. Every cell is on your side, which means you have hundreds of billions of allies.

Value spontaneity. Emotions change, cells change, the brain changes. Don't be the policeman who stops the river of change by blocking it with frozen, fixed beliefs.

So, I have discovered the beautiful scent of Palo-Santo : Palo Santo is a mystical tree that grows on the coast of South America and is related to Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal. In Spanish, the name literally means “Holy Wood”. It is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon. Palo Santo is traditionally used for relieving common colds, flu symptoms, stress, asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression, inflammation, emotional pain and more. This Essential Oil is great for Aromatherapy and can also be used during massage work to assist in healing.Great for calming the immune and nervous systems for faster recovery of illness. In essential oil form, it works well for physical pain and inflammation containing high levels of D-Limonene and Monotropenes that are useful for cancer symptoms.

A great few books that have caught my attention have been 'The Universe Has Your Back" by Gabrielle Bernstein, ' The Power Of Meaning' by Emily Esfahani Smith and 'The Body Remembers' by Babette Rothschild. All of which have given me greater understanding and meaning in my own psychological but also spiritual path. I guess I can see a pattern here now of some 'me' time of hibernating, taking this easy and learning to deepen my practise.

I have also started my yoga practise this month. I actually used to do yoga quite a bit previously, but this had fallen by the way side of late. But I have recently re-disocvered the healing properties of yoga and the way that the body is positioned in deferent postures to elicit healing and strength. I would like to develop this practise further and perhaps it could be something that I do regularly.
